Zep Inc.
02  /  The audit

Six hundred and two people wrote the same two words. The homepage has never said them.

Of 1,214 positive reviews on Zep’s own site, 602 say the product worked. What they are describing is a job closing and staying closed — and 29 of the 149 complaints describe exactly the opposite. It is all already written down, on pages the homepage does not link to. Everything here follows from that.

Three gaps, in the order they cost money
Gap one
The proof is on the site and never reaches the front of it

1,428 people have written a review on zep.com. Not one of them appears on the homepage. The first line a visitor reads is a shipping threshold, the hero sells a season, and the closest the page gets to what a buyer is actually thinking is a dropdown labelled “Tell us about your mess.” The single most valuable asset this company has is one click away and never surfaces.

Gap two
One sub-brand is spending the rating the others earned

Every product line carrying the Zep name sits between 4.35 and 4.60. Enforcer pest control sits at 3.69 across 167 written reviews, with 28.1% of them one or two star — three times the next worst line and seven times the degreasers. Same company, same checkout, same search results. A customer who is let down by Enforcer has been let down by Zep.

Gap three
Four in ten complaints attack the only claim that matters

Of 149 negative reviews, 61 say the product did not do the job. That is not a packaging complaint or a price complaint. It is the exact opposite of the thing 602 other people came to the site to praise. And not one of the 149 has a reply beneath it.

One more thing
The scores are bimodal, not average

72.8% of written reviews are five star and 8.9% are one star. Only 6.1% sit anywhere in the middle. That is not the curve a quality problem makes. It is the curve a matching problem makes: the product either fits the job or it does nothing, and nothing on the site helps a buyer work out which one they are about to get. An average of 4.4 hides two different companies.

Evidence base

1,428 written customer reviews across 81 products, pulled from Zep’s own review platform on 22 August 2026, with all 927 catalogue SKUs probed. Ratings without written text are excluded, so every count here is a person who chose to say something. The live site and four About pages, captured the same day. Zep’s press releases of 24 March, 13 April and 19 August 2026. Nothing is paraphrased and nothing is invented.
